Racism, both overt and covert, hurts us as individuals, communities and a society. Experiencing and witnessing racism at university can seriously impact how we feel and how we engage with our studies and social life.

Week 8

Black Students Talk: Being Black and neurodiverse 

Being Black and neurodiverse at university can be tough. University isn’t built for us. Whether you’re diagnosed, undiagnosed, or unsure. A lot of us have to fight to fit a neurotypical world and feel emotionally exhausted doing it.

Understanding and reflecting on our motivations for the things we do and say can be important for our knowledge of self. Doing this is hard when you’re not feeling well mentally.

The stories we tell ourselves and others sometimes don’t match up with the stories others tell about us and our community. 

 

Together we can reclaim our narrative to one that tells the story we want, need and deserve to hear.

Week 12

Black Students Talk:      Tree of Life

The tree of life is an exercise for reclaiming our identity and direction in life, through story.

Together we will take time to reflect on where we’re from, where we are now, and where we’re going. The important people in our lives, the gifts we have been given, and overcoming challenges.

Black Students Talk: The arts, self expression and wellbeing

Music, art, dance, and self expression plays an important role in many of our lives, mental health and wellbeing.

The arts are a way for us to understand ourselves, connect with others, and share our stories.
